A eficácia da fototerapia no tratamento da hiperbilirrubinemia neonatal depende do valor da irradiância, dentro de um determinado espectro centrado no azul visível, que alcança o paciente, e da duração da exposição, i.e., da dose de energia efetivamente recebida. Este valor é difícil de se calcular devido às variações intrínsecas da irradiância e às frequentes interrupções necessárias para a alimentação e higiene do recém-nascido. Foi projetado e construído um integrador capaz de monitorar continuamente a densidade de energia, na faixa de O a 512 J/cm2 , entregue ao paciente durante o trata mento. Além de calcular a dose, este aparelho permite detectar se a irradiância for inferior a um mínimo pré-determinado, como também in dicar se a dose acumulada atingiu um valor pré-selecionado.

In the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia the efficacy of phototherapy depends strongly on the irradiance, within a certain spectrum centered at the visible blue region, that reaches the patient, and on the duration of the exposure, i.e., on the dose of energy that is actually received. This value is difficult to compute due to intrinsic variations of the irradiance and to the frequent interruptions needed to feed and clean the newborn. A dosemeter capable of monitoring continuosly the energy density, within the range of O to 512 J/cm2 , delivered to the patient during the treatment has been designed and built. Besides calculating the dose, this instrument can detect if the irradiance droped below a pre-determined threshold; furthermore, it can indicate whether the accumulated dose reached a preset value.
