Abstract

Two stimulators have been developed as parts of an integrated system of instrumentation for evoked potential based on a PC·AT compatible. Both use 8085A rnicroprocessors and are assembled on boards inserted into expansion slots. The first one is an eleetrical stimulator for evaluating the somatosensory system, capable of generating current pulses with amplitude, duration, and repetition rate seleeted by the user through a menu included into the main menu of the averager. Its output circuitry is optically coupled to the rest and is powered by a DC·DC converter, thereby assuring eleetrical safety of patients. The second is an acoustical stimulator for evaluating the auditory system, capable of generating four kinds of sounds: clicks, pure tones, tone bursts, and white noise. Again the user can select, through another menu, the stimulus parameters (waveform, intensity, and repetition rate) and determine whether the white noise should be added to either earphone or to both sides for masking purposes. Preliminary tests show this system is ideal for c1inics and small hospitais, which can incorporate EPs into their praetice with Iittle additiohal investment, since most already have PCs.
