Abstract

The apparatus described in this paper provides a voltage proportional to the angular displacement of simple joints such as the elbow and knee. The signal is developed from light transmitted to a photodiode through a previously exposed photographic film whose optical density on the optical axis is a linear function of the angle of rotation around another parallel axis. The light source and photodiode are fixed to one member and the fl1m is flXed to the other such that its axis of rotation coincides with that of the joint between the two members. Data wil be shown that correlate knee rotations with the breathing and cardiac rythms of a normal adult on an ergometric bycicle. The output of the angle transducer is digitized with the other physiological data for computer analysis.
