Abstract

It is presented the design, development and construction of an ophthalmologic bio-instrument for visual field functional evaluation purposes. It is based mainly in the objective quantification by monitoring, processing and analyzing of images and pupilar response signals produced for pupil reflex and visual evoked potentials (objective perimetry). Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and the pupilar responses play an important role in the visual field examination. It is presented the instrumentation and processing developed for obtaining Objective Perimetry. Automatic and Objective Perimeter is based on Goldmann Perimeter and the projector consists of fiber optics. This instrument is equipped with an Electroencephalograph for obtaining the VEPs, Video-oculograph for measuring the pupilar area and an eye position detector on time with the purpose of eliminate false responses caused by eye movements. The system is associated with a PC trough an AIO card, a frame grabber, an infrared camera and a VCR. There have been developed some algorithms of digital image and signal processing. The instrument has been evaluated in our laboratory using an extensive patient analysis and the results have been satisfactory. Simultaneous changes have been recorded in the pupilar area and VEPs with a small light stimulus. This is a new automatic and objective perimetry which eliminates the subjectivity of the patient and Optometrists, also it demonstrates that VEPs and pupilar responses are objective methods and indicators ofthe visual field and the sensibility thresholds.
